Description: This is a compact and succinct guide for clinicians caring for those with psychiatric diagnoses. It explores common drugs, diagnostic algorithms organized according to diagnosis, nonpharmacological treatments, basic biology of psychopharmacology, and special populations. Guidelines stem from the latest algorithms and research largely from the United Kingdom.
Purpose: The authors identify their goal is to compile an easy to use and practical resource that summarizes the latest state of the evidence for psychiatric clinicians. The emphasis is on the need for ongoing awareness of the literature and treatment recommendations in psychiatry. Specifically, information in this guide is pulled from the British Association for Psychopharmacology Guidelines. In light of the growing body of available guidelines and treatment recommendations, a summation of the most current material is valuable to clinicians who are looking for an efficient source.
Audience: Psychiatric clinicians are the main audience, but the authors also identify pharmacists, nurses, and physicians in other specialties as readers who may benefit. Based on the detailed psychopharmacology and prescribing recommendations, this book would be most appropriate for those taking the primary prescribing role for patients with psychiatric diagnoses. The authors are specialists in psychiatry and neuropsychiatry associated with the U.K.'s National Institute for Health Research in collaboration with the British Association for Psychopharmacology.
Features: The largest section of the book is an alphabetical breakdown of common drugs used in psychiatric practice, and psychotropic medications are not the only drugs included. Drugs used for common general medical conditions are also incorporated, and the decision to include these appears to be based upon drug interactions with psychotropics and alterations in metabolism. The book continues with treatment approach by diagnosis with pertinent algorithms and flow diagrams conveniently embedded. Remarkably, the book also thoughtfully includes nonpharmacological considerations. For those who need a refresher, the book summarizes pharmacology concepts before it dives into special populations and psychiatric emergency management. It might have been helpful to include notation of which drugs are exclusively approved in the U.K. as well as pertinent additional resources for U.S. clinicians.
Assessment: Overall, the authors achieve their goal of summarizing current evidence in a compact guide for psychiatric practice. Although Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology: Prescriber's Guide, 6th edition, Stahl (Cambridge University Press, 2017), offers a more aesthetically pleasing and thorough approach to psychotropic medications, this pocket guide is certainly more compact and practical to carry. It would best be used as a quick reference for a specific question relating to psychopharmacology at the bedside. It is a good option for a portable book to keep at the fingertips.
