CHAPTER 1
Hold On
6/15/09
Gazing at the sky turning gray
Right before the spray of rain
In the distance you hear a low sound of thunder
Just like trouble comes knocking on your door
Before you can gather your thoughts
It becomes dark, can't walk or talk
Because you are trying to see through the storm
Hoping and praying this one won't last so long
Each situation that comes
Should leave you stronger than the first one
After the storm a rainbow is formed
Somehow life has a way of turning night to dawn
Hold on
Concentrate
We make decisions that
Will bring about change
For some it is strange
Because the consequences
Turns out not to be a gain
After the deed is done
We blame someone
For what has become burdensome
Think before you leap
The bottom of the pit
Is usually quite deep
Grand-daughter
10/9/09
Find it difficult to breathe
When you are not here
Whenever I inhale
There is pain in my chest
For I hurt and miss my princess
It is hard to say your name
Absolutely nothing is the same
As it should be
For I miss you so much
My Sweet Pea
Down South
10/16/09
The old country store
Back then a penny got you more
Butter cookies, Oatmeal, Coconut,
Chocolate, Vanilla and Lemon
Oh, the smell of Cinnamon
Lemon drops, bon bons, tootsie rolls,
Mary Janes, squirrel nuts and sugar babies
All you inhaled was splendid flavors
Cracker jacks, peppermint and bubble gum
Hoping no one say, gimme some
Twin popsicles cherry being the favorite
Created things with the sticks
Took your time with every lick
Ice cream cones never made it home
Sour balls, red hot balls
It was a challenge to suck it all
Soda pop tasted so strong
And sugar daddies lasted so long
Church Folks
10/17/09
It is a fragile thing
When a soul is seeking to be whole
Like climbing out of a hole onto a limb
As the wind blows it bends
If we are not careful
And listen to the testimony told
We could easily lose that soul
The nay sayers and whisperers
Have forgotten what it was like
To roam around in the dark
Some are quick to remark
On someone else's life
Be careful
It is a fragile thing
When a soul is seeking to be whole
Georgia
10/17/09
My sweetheart and me
Started off on an adventure
Into the woods we went
Amongst the trees
The butterflies and the bumblebees
Grasshoppers and caterpillars
No fear just grinning
From ear to ear
So happy it was the end of the school year
Summer and the month of June
Plums, peaches, black berries and pears
Will be ready for picking soon
The sun warm and a nice breeze
Moving around the leaves
The rustling of the trees made us believe
We were being chased by bears
There was no one there
Just me and my friend
Playing and enjoying fresh air
Will You Remember
11-22-09
Stood in the gap for you
Knew you when you could
Sit on my lap
You could always make me laugh
Will you remember me
Did the best that I could
Didn't matter that we lived in the hood
Everyone knew where we stood
Will you remember me
A friend to you and your kids
Loved them like they were my own
Spoke to them about their tone
Especially when speaking to you
Listened to words no one else heard
Will you remember me
We sang and danced in the living room
To Teddy, Luther, Gladys and the Four Tops
Really love you a lot
Shared what we got
Always thought
You would remember me
Big Momma's House
1/9/10
There is a path to walk
Permission to talk
When you go to big momma's house
Dolls of all kinds on the wall
All dressed up in the hall
Breakfast with bacon and ham
Eggs and jam
Grits and biscuits hot in the pan
Go get me some eggs from
The Hen House
Little hands reach in the nest
And tried your best not to drop them
The spot you touch is still warm
As the chicken feathers swarm
Never ask big momma why
You have to go to sleep
Just close your eyes
And pray the lord to keep
A lemon tree right by
The porch steps
Which she daily swept
Colorful quilts adorned her bed
Always a hat or scarf on her head
You remember big momma's words
Quiet in the house
When the lord is talking
Thundering and lightening
And nothing else heard
Not one word
Games
Red light, green light
One two three
See you sneaking
Around that tree
Trying to get honey
From the bee
Raymond
1/11/10
Could not believe
You got up at six
To take me to the airport
The air had
A hint of warmth
And the sun peaked out
From under the horizon
Glowing like a full moon
Yellowish orange completely round
You did not make a sound
We looked at each other
Both smiling both knowing
A perfect moment
Just for us
No one else
On the road
Not a soul
Coming home
After all those years
To find out
You loved me still
Was just surreal
Home
Sleeping with my sisters
Was a natural thing to do
Glad I was not in the middle
It was convenient
warm and necessary
No other place to be
One night
there was a lot of noise
In the back room
could not
Figure out
why company was at
The house so late
All the voices were women
Next morning met my little brother
Think Hard
7/4/08
Those of you
Who have lost your mom
Was there something
You feel you could have done
Some feel they should have
Come over more
Some feel they should have
Bought bouquets of flowers
Some wish they had more hours
Some wish they were kinder
Instead of being disrespectful
Now those of you
Who still have your mom
Are you guilty of some
Know that
Would have
Should have
Could have
Means nothing
When she is gone
No Escape
1/9/2009
Often run like someone is chasing me
If I stop moving I would lose my mind
Cannot take the time
To remember what I left behind
How do I get rid of the demons
Fear, anger, grief
There seems to be no relief
Family and friends are around
All I want to do is leap off the ground
Soar through the air
To get away from the despair
Just Two
The power of love
Is in the heart
It has two parts
Both are needed
For the heart to beat
Like it was meant
For you two to meet
Today is a day
Filled with love
Blessed by the heavenly father above
For a marriage
To be complete
Remember to keep pace
With each
Other's heart beat
Voice it
Entering the sanctity of marriage
Is a partnership between two
It is seeing each other through
The good times and the bad
Helping each other when grieved and sad
Sharing accomplishments
Working through whatever happens to you
Telling the truth
When it hurts you too
You stand here today saying, "I do"
Remember that when you have had enough
For many things will come your way
Learn to pray, learn to speak about it
As it happens
Holding it will lead to disaster
Speak now
Don't want to hear it after
Memories
2/18/07
From time to time
Let my mind rewind
Of the life I left behind
My humble beginnings
Was not a horn of plenty
Responsibilities were many
Found a way to balance
Work and play
It was important then
What people say
Was not popular to be poor
Begging for food at the back door
Good folks always say
Take more
Grateful for those days
They have strengthened me
For the trials of today
Something Else
It is amazing
How hard I try
Not to stop
Mid stride
You have a way
Of twisting lies
No matter what I say
So hear this
Silence, silence
Night Sky
9/16/08
In the firmament
Was a sea of royal blue
Looked like snow that's new
Was a most beautiful view
Of a full moon peeking through
Much like pure joy that flows
Could have stood there for hours
Looking up at something
That man could not do
Living
10/30/08
Where we are now
Speaks to where
We have been
Decisions we made
When we were young
Some were right
Some were wrong
Sometimes strong
Did things nobody knows
Scars left behind still shows
If we knew then
What we know now
Some things would not have been
Life has a way
Of spinning
Poetry Month
4/29/09
Room filled with open faces
Intelligent, interested and gracious
Some wore smiles, some did not
Hoped I left them with a thought
Of why words should be heard
And to express them is an art
An instant connection to some
Enjoyed their response especially one
Some shared their thoughts and creations
This only fueled the conversation
Gained inspiration as we build on the relation
Between presenter and student
The experience for me will last
There is nothing like
Sharing in front of a class
Life Giver
5/9/09
A mother's love is unconditional
Her protection of her child
Is stronger than the lioness and her cub
She will forfeit her meal
To feed her baby
She will work from
Sun up to sun down
To provide whatever is needed
A mother makes sacrifices for her child
She silently cries for awhile
Endures heartaches and pain
Walks through the rain
To get to her baby
A mother will stay up late at night
Praying and waiting for her child to come home
Or call on the phone
A mother' love does not end
It lasts forever
A mother is closer than a friend
A mother keeps your secrets
Shares hers too
A mother will be there for you
A mother forgives you
A mother's heart engulfs you
A mother knows how to be tough too
A mother hurts just like you do
A mother is stronger and
her love lasts longer
Than life itself
Even when she has left
A mother's love remains
Birth
5/9/09
As age takes hold
Each year
The number
is not
As important
As being here
Memories
Can be retrieved
To keep you
Moving
forward
