Drawing on empirical evidence from the 1990-93 and 1995-97 , Moreno (political science, Instituto Technologico Autonomo de Mexico) argues that, while not surprisingly, political competition in emerging democracies is split between those parties proposing to further democratic consolidation and those advocating a return to authoritarian order, the cleavage may be overridden by issue salience and voter preferences. The author applies discriminant analyses of party electorates to this democratic-authoritarian polarity in the late 1990s in seven Latin American nations and makes cross-national comparisons.
