Strawberry-sized sleuths Poppy and Sam are back on the case!

It’s a new day in the garden, and Poppy and Sam are paying a visit to their friend Snuggles Molesy. But Snuggles is in a pickle, looking for a lost pair of pretty pink glasses! Sleuths Poppy and Sam begin to investigate: all around the garden, along the shore of the creek, and even inside the pies Snuggles had been baking. Along the way, they ask the other critters they encounter.

Poppy and Sam don’t have much luck finding the glasses, but they do come across a variety of other treasures: a flowered umbrella, a flute, a yellow spinning top, and more. By the end of the story, they set up a whimsical lost and found with all of these objects—and finally find the rosy specs, while their fellow garden friends find misplaced treasures of their own.

The second Poppy and Sam adventure, this picture book/graphic novel hybrid is full of friendly characters, charming details, and a fun and suspenseful storyline that will be sure to delight young readers.

About the Author

CATHON is an artist and creator of children’s books and comics. She studied visual arts and media at the Université du Québec à Montréal, and is the creator of the Poppy and Sam series and the illustrator of A Fire Truck for Chuck in addition to several books in French. Cathon lives in Montreal, Quebec.

K-Gr 2-Poppy and her best friend Sam live in an oversized garden, where mushrooms and blades of grass tower over them. Poppy is a little girl with straight black hair with bangs, pulled back in a bun, while Sam is a panda. First introduced in Poppy and Sam and the Leaf Thief, the two are back to solve a new mystery. They visit their friend Snuggles Molesy and are delighted that she has baked delicious pies, though there's little time to enjoy treats while Snuggles's glasses are missing! As the trio retrace Snuggles's steps, they find many lost items, from a bowling ball to a paintbrush, which they pile up for later. Once the glasses are recovered, they devise the perfect plan for the other items: a lost and found. Comic book-like illustrations celebrate Poppy and Sam's whimsical garden world. Insects and other expressive characters can be seen in the background—a frog washes dishes in the creek as Poppy and her pals look for the eyeglasses. Poppy's compassion for the residents of the garden drives the plot, and the gentle mystery and setting will resonate with children. Following their introduction in Poppy & Sam and the Leaf Thief (2018), miniature girl Poppy and her diminutive panda friend, Sam, are back, with another mystery to solve.

It's a lovely day for a stroll among the flowers, and Poppy and Sam decide to pay a visit to Snuggles the mole. Snuggles' home is full of freshly baked pies, which attract Sam's focus, but Snuggles' glasses have gone missing, so the nearsighted animal can't read. Sam gets right to work investigating the pies for the glasses while Poppy asks Snuggles what else the mole has done today so they can retrace steps and hopefully find the missing specs. Their efforts take the trio to the riverside, a spider web, a mushroom, and up a tree. In each place, they find lost items belonging to other creatures, and they begin quite a collection. After much walking and interviewing, they finally find what they are seeking and manage to return all the items they found—a tiring but satisfying adventure that ends in bed. Cathon's sweet illustrations feature spring colors and nature scenes; various small, smiling creatures that fly or crawl and have bit parts are a fun addition to the main story. Comics panels are interspersed with full-page illustrations. Poppy, who presents as a girl of color, is a thoughtful, creative, caring leader.

With its admirable protagonist, this is delightful easy reading with equal parts humor and heart. (Graphic novel. 4-9)
