Description: This book emphasizes population health with nurses at the forefront of a proactive prevention-focused model to promote a less fragmented, illness-based healthcare system. Several different settings are explored with examples of diverse populations representing a variety of healthcare needs.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a field guide for nurses to explore population health, with five sections highlighting nine overlapping settings. The book is an appropriate resource for nurses working in any setting and for students to gain insights from 23 experienced nurse contributors.
Audience: The suggested audience consists primarily of undergraduate nursing students, as well as registered nurses seeking their baccalaureate nursing degrees. Although the book is written in an elementary fashion, it includes numerous key concepts for every level of nursing student.
Features: The book is effectively divided into five overarching sections, further divided by potential population health categories and the role of the nurse in each setting. Part I on the community setting covers such topics as advocacy and policy roles, even including homeless populations in the community. Part 2 reviews home care and rural settings, which include chronically ill and immigrant populations. Specifically, this part covers patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, and medication management in the home. Part 3 relates to school-based and primary care nursing, and addresses topics such as obesity and alcohol use. Part 4 focuses on population health in the medical home, hospice, and palliative care setting. This part includes populations such as patients with stroke, veterans with substance abuse disorders, and perinatal populations with life-limiting diagnoses. The fifth and final part reviews acute and long-term care settings and addresses topics such as anxiety disorders in long term care and misuse of the emergency department in acute care. Each chapter begins with background about the population and discusses basic facts related to the impact of the population and problems they face regarding cost and morbidity. Each chapter discusses the role of the nurse and includes a conclusion or summary. Chapters also have case studies, clinical reasoning activities, and key terms.
Assessment: This book is clearly written and covers numerous concepts that nurses working in any setting, with any population, should know in order to provide optimal care. With every population, the authors review demographic and social determinants of health and barriers to wellness. As the book notes, it is better to focus on prevention and education when addressing problems that can arise in many populations. I particularly appreciate the book's seemingly current perspective about the nursing role as political activist following the recommendations of the American Nurses Association.
