Description: Dyslipidemia is one of the most common diagnoses made in the office setting and the leading modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, only a few recent updates provide brief overviews that apply a clinical approach to the management of this relatively complex common medical problem. This book meets the challenge by providing a simply written and clinically focused overview of lipid disorders that includes a good mix of scientific background with practical management for the clinician.
Purpose: The purpose is to present major concepts that clinicians should know to effectively diagnose and manage their patients with lipid disorders in a bulleted format. The intent is not to provide comprehensive information, but to cover the essential issues and provide the rationale and scientific understanding of effective treatment.
Audience: This is an ideal book for cardiologists (cardiology fellows) or internists/family physicians with a strong interest in the treatment of lipid disorders. For those looking for a more basic understanding of lipid disorders, this book may be a little too advanced.
Features: Although brief, the book is a thorough overview of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, genetic disorders of dyslipidemia, and the clinical trials that provide the evidence for the current treatment guidelines. The book provides a simplified review in three different chapters of LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. Very good chapters cover the management of dyslipidemia in patients with diabetes, HIV, and chronic kidney disease.
Assessment: I recommend this book to anyone who desires a high level but brief overview of the management of patients with dyslipidemia. The book can be read in its entirety in just a few hours, but it is also the kind of book that can be a quick reference when a patient presents with an interesting lipid disorder or a challenging management issue.
