This is a book for pathologists who deal frequently with cardiovascular disease. The stated objective is to provide a "concise and practical bench book" for pathologists dealing with cardiovascular disease with some frequency. Based on their work, one can appreciate that the authors have generally attained their goal, and have done so with a quality effort. This is not to say that this is a comprehensive book; nor is it one that those with considerable experience in cardiovascular pathology would accept entirely without taking issue with some of the material. This book has much to offer to general pathologists, forensic pathologists, pathology residents, and medical students (and even for non-pathologists with an interest in heart disease) and is a superb addition to the literature. In nine chapters of a relatively short book, one can only expect an overview of basic cardiac pathology. However, this book has four significant and very positive elements that should appeal to a broad audience: an introductory chapter on cardiac anatomy and dissection techniques; a superb chapter on coronary artery atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease that undoubtably reflects the authors' interests and expertise in this field; an excellent chapter on the analysis of sudden cardiac death; and a very good chapter on death following cardiac surgery and invasive interventions. These four chapters are the highlight of this book, and they set it apart from many other cardiac pathology texts. Furthermore, this book has one additional feature that fully justifies its rather high price -- absolutely outstanding illustrations, both gross and microscopic, virtually all in color. In fact, one could arguethat this guide is more like an atlas of cardiovascular pathology than a textbook. Still, in contrast to other atlases, there is sufficient text, excellent graphics, and useful tables. The references for each chapter are not inclusive, but they are adequate to provide background reading. The index is useful and well-prepared. Although I have differences with the authors regarding some pathology and pathophysiological concepts, particularly in their chapter on cardiomyopathy and myocarditis, and it is unfortunate that the discussion of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is already a little out of date (as there are now seven genetic defects identified, not the five listed), these are not sufficiently significant deficiencies to quibble over. This is an excellent book that deserves a place on the shelf of all those interested in cardiovascular pathology.
