About the Author

Dr Vishal Madan, MBBS (Hons), MD, FRCP is a Consultant dermatologist, Laser and Dermatological surgeon at the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Manchester. After completing the Addenbrooke's Cambridge medical rotation in 2004, he undertook his specialist training in Dermatology in Manchester. He did two fellowships- one in Laser Dermatology at the Salford Royal NHS Foundation trust and another in Mohs micrographic (Skin cancer) and reconstructive skin surgery at the Welsh Institute of Dermatology, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. Dr Madan has published in excess of 110 scientific articles, authored 10 book chapters and edited a book on speciality examination in Dermatology and another on skin cancer. He has been an invited reviewer for 11 international journals. He is the president of the British Medical Laser Association.

Description: This is an in-depth presentation of basic laser physics and how it affects a dermatologist's decision in choosing a particular laser to treat vascular/pigmented lesions. The chapter discussing fundamental laser principles is excellent. Different types of lasers and light devices are covered in detail, specifically usage indications and clinical considerations when determining which settings and which skin types are most appropriate for the best treatment outcomes. There are many before and after clinical photographs.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide dermatologists with a good basic understanding of how a laser works and how to decide which laser should be used to treat a given skin condition.
Audience: The audience is cosmetic dermatologists.
Features: Practical advice for dermatologists focusing on a laser practice is the strength of this book. In the chapter discussing devices for treating erythema and vascular lesions, the authors point out why certain lasers would be preferable for a given condition and which symptoms of rosacea may improve or worsen with laser, while sharing their personal tips on how to assess and pretreat patients prior to performing laser. Emails are included for all the authors should readers wish to contact them. There are many before and after treatment clinical photos in color. It would be useful to know where the authors recommend best performing test sites prior to performing complete treatments and how long to wait to judge the energy response in the skin.
Assessment: This book will be useful for dermatologists who are starting private practice and contemplating which lasers to include in their clinic. Dermatologists already established with a laser practice would benefit from an update. There are many lasers from which to choose, and the technology is rapidly evolving. This book helps you sort out which devices are the best fit for your practice and patient population.
