About the Author

Christopher C R Chapple BSc MD FRCS (Urol), Professor of Urology and Consultant Urological Surgeon, Urology Rat esearch Department, The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, UK. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the journal Neurourology & Urodynamics. His particular interest is in functional reconstruction of the lower urinary tract and the underlying pharmacologic control mechanisms, and he has developed a regional and supra-regional referral practice. He serves many international urological associations and journals

Description: The field of urology continues to excel in its technological advancements and better understanding of basic pathophysiology of urologic disease processes. This book not only brings readers up to date on cutting-edge technologies and scientific principles, it is also a well-balanced discussion of clinical outcomes.
Purpose: The authors provide an update of principles that are often forgotten and provide effective and concise summaries of various meaningful topics that can be confusing to trainees.
Audience: Healthcare providers involved in the delivery of care to urological patients with benign or malignant disease will thoroughly appreciate this book. The text is supplemented by a number of clear illustrations and concise summary tables that make it easy to follow and understand.
Features: The book is divided into two main sections. The first focuses on recent advances in the core fundamentals of urologic disease processes. The fundamentals the book discusses are the ones we stress to urology residents, but are often forgotten by clinical practitioners. This section covers embryology, male reproductive anatomy, urinary tract physiology, urologic endocrinology, and an update on endoscopes and lasers. These chapters offer concise summaries for residents while keeping seasoned urologists engaged. The second part of the book reviews common urologic disorders managed on a daily basis such as prostatitis, hematuria, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and erectile dysfunction. In general, these chapters are not geared towards surgical techniques but rather towards patient presentation, workup, and management strategies. For example, the chapter on urethral pathology discusses various principles of reconstruction such as graft selection, but not necessarily the surgical steps of urethroplasty. The illustrations in both sections are plentiful and appropriate. One criticism is that the last few chapters on urologic oncology are brief and provide only an overview of bladder, prostate, and testes cancers. These chapters do not go into the same amount of depth that most of other chapters do.
Assessment: This book effectively combines basic sciences and urologic pathophysiology and their significance to daily clinical practice. In addition, it integrates the basis of disease and pathophysiology with clinical management well. The authors have compiled a comprehensive book that is a great reference on urological diagnostic and surgical tools, methods, and techniques, and the ongoing research of upcoming technologies.
