This book uses a case-based approach to provide current information on a range of medical issues with the goal of enhancing preoperative evaluation and optimization. Description: This book presents a case-based approach to perioperative evaluation and optimization. It is divided into sections according to body system and each section consists of chapters detailing the most common disorders found in the practice of anesthesiology. Its unique approach with clinical scenarios renders the reading easy and extremely practical providing evidence-based guidance for preoperative assessment including updated algorithms.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide guidance for perioperative assessment enabling the reader to successfully evaluate the patient who presents for preoperative optimization. Focusing on reduction of perioperative risk and successful outcomes, it highlights common clinical scenarios representing the growing surgical population with multiple comorbidities.
Audience: The intended audience is all anesthesia practitioners including residents, although any individual providing preoperative care will find the book helpful and interesting. The authors show expertise in the subject providing accurate guidance for perioperative assessment based on current evidence.
Features: The book discusses the current perioperative management of 48 common medical problems in the practice of anesthesiology. Each chapter begins with a clinical scenario of a specific disorder being discussed followed by a question-and-answer type investigation of pertinent issues. These questions address frequently encountered clinical situations based on the best evidence and related guidelines. Relevant data including EKGs and imaging are exhibited. Each section closes with the outcome of the initial case presented after appropriate interventions, followed by true/false questions providing a review of the key points discussed previously. The book also incorporates additional resources for the readers to explore.
Assessment: Along the growing incidence of comorbidities in the surgical population and the recognition of the preoperative optimization importance for risk reduction and better postoperative outcomes, this book comes as a helpful tool with an entertaining approach for preoperative optimization. The book is well written and extremely useful for those proving preoperative care for patients, while the case-based approach renders the reading pleasant and practical. Currently there are no other titles available using this method.
