About the Author

Stephen M. Stahl is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego and Honorary Visiting Senior Fellow in Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge. He has conducted various research projects awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health, Veterans Affairs, and the pharmaceutical industry. Author of more than 500 articles and chapters, Dr Stahl is also the author of the bestseller Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology (Cambridge, 2013).

Description: This long overdue psychopharmacology reference takes the at-a-glance format of the original Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology: Prescriber's Guide, 6th edition (Cambridge University Press, 2018), and applies it to medications commonly used to treat mental illness in the pediatric population.
Purpose: This book serves a similar purpose as its adult psychopharmacology predecessor, which is to provide a practical guide to starting, stopping, combining, and changing psychiatric medications for various indications. In this adaptation, the focus is on medications prescribed to children and adolescents. This book does not aim to provide comprehensive information about pharmacodynamics/pharmacokinetics.
Audience: This book is intended for any clinician who prescribes psychiatric medications to pediatric patients. The nicely organized and color-coded format make it useful for novice and seasoned practitioners and students alike.
Features: For each medication (organized in alphabetical order by the generic drug name), the guide lays out information on various useful topics including therapeutics, safety/tolerability, dosing, and special populations (patients with comorbidity, intellectual/developmental disability, and foster children). This information is presented concisely and in color-coded sections with intuitive symbols marking different points.
Assessment: This guide is useful, pragmatic, and incredibly easy to navigate and read. It provides medication information and can be used as a simple, real-time reference in clinical practice or when reviewing different agents for educational purposes. The Stahl's for adult/general psychiatry has been a staple reference for clinicians and trainees for years, so this book on child and adolescent psychiatry would be a welcome addition for any clinician working with children with mental illness. For more in-depth information about pharmacodynamics/kinetics, another book or research literature may be more appropriate.
