About the Author

Holly Hobbie has worked as an artist for nearly forty years and has also illustrated the classic poem The Night Before Christmas. She is the author of eleven acclaimed, bestselling Toot & Puddle picture books as well as Gem, Fanny, Fanny & Annabelle, and Everything but the Horse.

PreS-Gr 2-In this follow-up story to Toot and Puddle (Little, Brown, 1997), Puddle is having a difficult time shopping for the right birthday gift for his best friend. He wants to give his pal something special and out of the ordinary. Then he comes across a present that he thinks will be perfect...or will it? Hobbie beautifully depicts these two appealing pigs in expressive and detailed watercolors. Her paintings have the look of a bygone era without appearing dated. The pictures are awash with a broad spectrum of colors ranging from golden yellows to pale pinks and misty aqua. The illustrations effectively convey the tone of the story with lighting that ranges from bright and cheery to dark and subdued. Hobbie's porcine characters (Toot and Puddle, 1997) are back in a sweet but disjointed effort. Toot's birthday is coming up, and Puddle doesn't know what to get him—-nothing is special enough for his extraordinary friend. After combing several stores, he finds a unique present waiting in the pet shop: Tulip, a chatty, but expensive parrot who needs a home. After taking Tulip home, Puddle learns that Toot finds parrots loud and squawking. Puddle doesn't want to abandon Tulip; he's also worried that the parrot may not like their neighborhood. He surprises Toot with the pet anyway, and to his relief, Toot loves his present. The storyline has too many gaps, but Hobbie's watercolors are delightful, and Puddle's search for the perfect present is endearing. (Picture book. 3-6) .
