Principia of Ethnology: The Origin of Races and Color
"A Negro scholar, Dr. Martin R. Delaney, contended that the entire human race was originally of a dark complexion; that the word Adam signifies dark, as the word Ham signifies the same thing." -Brooklyn Ethical Association, 1892

The origin of races is one of the most interesting themes of the day to speculative minds. The most prevalent opinion is that the races had a common origin, and that the various colors, physical peculiarities, are the effect of climate, soil, and other natural surroundings. Whatever may be our ethnological creed as to the origin of races—we must recognize that the members of the various races of today are not responsible for their distinctive peculiarities.

Martin Robison Delany (1812 –1885) was an African-American abolitionist, journalist, physician, soldier and writer, and arguably the first proponent of black nationalism. In 1880 he published "Principia of Ethnology: The Origin of Races and Color" in which he argues that the entire human race was originally of a dark complexion."
