Description: Simply wonderful is how I characterize this book! Excellent and concise explanations of mechanisms of action, how to properly perform various procedures (surgical, laser, cryotherapy, chemical peels, filler injections, etc.), and precautions to consider for optimal outcomes are presented.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide sound advice and review established clinical data that support dermatologists' use of numerous medical and cosmetic procedures. These goals are well met.
Audience: The audience is all dermatologists.
Features: Overall, the clinical advice is presented logically and in the context of what makes the best sense based on scientific studies and physiologically. The immunological and biological reactions that lead to improvement and the specific cellular healing that occurs is helpful for choosing an effective therapy (or combination). There are many useful tables contrasting the advantages and disadvantages of agents that can be employed for the same desired result, e.g. hemostasis or antibacterial action. The photographs demonstrating how to inject fillers are very good. The discussion of the function of cosmetic ingredients is well written. It would be educational in the next edition to see photographs of the skin's appearance immediately following a procedure and even a day or two afterwards to give an idea of the typical progression of healing. One series of photographs shows intense pulsed light treatment in a patient, but there are no photographs showing the crusting and inflammation that develops immediately following the treatment. More in-depth discussions of how to treat complications that may occur with procedures would also be welcomed.
Assessment: I plan to keep this reference close by. It is chock full of excellent advice. Yes, it is like a jack of all trades with its discussions of the myriad of procedures medical and cosmetic dermatologists use in their practice, and there are many other fine books on this same topic. I prefer this one because of the clarity and practicality of the information.
