CHAPTER 1

Princess Promises

Because of [God's] glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises.

2 Peter 1:4

A lot of people like watching royal families. They look for news about kings, queens, princes, and princesses. They buy special editions of magazines or collectors' books devoted to special events like royal weddings and royal births. When Prince William of Great Britain married Kate Middleton, many Americans got up in the early hours of the morning to watch the wedding because of time-zone differences. When William and Kate's baby was due to be born, people around the world eagerly awaited news of the royal baby's birth.

Did you know you are royalty? No, you weren't born into a royal family, and your father or mother probably doesn't sit on a throne and wear a crown. You aren't on television waving to the crowds or presiding over a royal event. But if you have confessed your sins and decided to live for God, you are a daughter of the heavenly King, and that makes you one of his own princesses.

Today's verse says your heavenly King has many special promises and words of instruction for you. Some of these instructions will help you grow to be more like Jesus as you daily seek to follow God (see Philippians 2:2-4). The promises you'll read can help you face whatever problems or joys each day may bring. If you're discouraged, they give you new hope (see John 16:33). If you're tired, they give you strength (see Isaiah 40:31). If you're afraid, they give you courage (see Deuteronomy 31:6).

God's promises guide you in the right direction and remind you of who you are in him. As you read through this book, you will encounter many promises God has given you, as well as verses with instructions for your life. Take time to read them, think about them, and understand how they can help you.

Write down at least one Bible verse with a promise or instruction God has given you. How does it apply to your life today? If you can't think of any, look up the verses mentioned above and choose one that speaks to you. Or you can use the concordance in the back of your Bible or an online concordance to locate verses. Just look for a key word such as courage, peace, or strength, and see what verses are listed. These are God's promises just for you!
