The Nuremberg trials began in October 1945, with 24 high-ranking Nazis standing trial for war crimes before an international military tribunal. Twenty-two defendants were eventually tried; one was too ill, another committed suicide. All 22 were hanged except Rudolph Hess, who died in prison, and Hermann Goring, who committed suicide the night before he was to be executed. But many Nazis and collaborators fled the Third Reich as it collapsed in 1945, settling in other parts of the world. In Rosenbaum's thoughtful and convincing book, he defends the thesis that the continuation of efforts to prosecute fugitive Nazi war criminals is an urgent moral imperative. A failure to fulfill this obligation by permitting the Nazi offenders to evade justice would violate the values and principles that bring meaning to our lives as morally autonomous social beings.
