Overview

The aim of this book will be to contribute to the education of a new generation of experts in urology, molecular biology, pathology and oncology, offering them sufficient knowledge in basic and translational research to be fluency in the web of interacting networks playing a role in prostate cancer development, progression, metastasis and drug-resistance.The volume will cover the latest innovative researches in prostate cancer, with particular emphasis to the state-of-the-art analysis technologies that are essential for the accurate identification of molecular targets for disease diagnosis, molecular mechanisms of tumorigenesis, markers for susceptibility, molecular-based prognostic prevision, characterization of biomarkers of drug efficacy and drug resistance, validation of new therapeutics and diagnostics. Current advancements on the intersecting data concerning transcriptomes, proteomes, the molecular techniques referred as "omes", will be reported and discussed.

Description: A valuable compendium of salient topics in prostate cancer, this book encompasses the field, from diagnostic and prognostic criteria to current therapeutic approaches, while also offering valuable background in molecular pathology, genetics, and epigenetics.
Purpose: The main goal is not to meticulously dissect prostate cancer at the clinical, biological, and molecular levels, but rather to provide readers with either sufficient information for a general understanding of the disease or a starting point from which to delve into more specialized literature in an educated fashion.
Audience: This book seems ideally directed to urologists aiming to learn more about the intricacies of prostate cancer at the cellular and molecular level as well as bench scientists and biologists with an interest in a comprehensive perspective on the disease.
Features: The first chapter offers an extremely useful overview of the fundamental criteria used in the diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of prostate cancer and is followed by seven chapters focusing on crucial aspects that characterize the tumors of the prostate gland from the standpoint of molecular pathology. Four more chapters summarize the role of genetic and epigenetic alterations detected in prostate cancer cells. Finally, the last six chapters place the appropriate emphasis on the need for fully understanding the clinical and histopathological lethal variants of prostate cancer and the ongoing quest for conceiving the most effective treatments.
Assessment: Drawbacks include an extended chapter on apoptosis and autophagy in prostate cancer as opposed to a much shorter examination of the role of the androgen receptor and steroidogenesis pathways in the disease. In addition, the review of some topics could have been assigned to investigators with widely demonstrated first-hand experience in the field. Despite these shortcomings, it is easy to see the usefulness of this book for practicing urologists as well as basic and translational scientists. Its strengths are the excellent illustrations and the opportunity to implement both text and graphics with online resources.
