Overview

THIS IS THE BIG HANDBOOK, Books 1-3, PSALMS 1-89. Bring along this wonderful edition to study and sing on a tour of Israel... walking through the gates of Jerusalem, tracing the twelve tribes is enhanced. These are the songs and prayers of the shepherd boy turned King David.

The Psalms were meant to be sung! This is your go-to resource for singable, recitable Psalm lyrics. Now you can sing your next Bible study. This is a game-like fun way to bond and discuss real life issues in any worship setting, and equip members in many aspects of theology. While some books teach about the Psalms, none offer small group participation, or quick personal memory work, like this.

Recipient of the 2017 Illumination GOLD Medal in Education and Finalist in Foreword Performing Arts. Here are the musical contemplations of Queen Esther and the disciples of Jesus. Your spiritual ancestors also went through fire and flood.

Who were the prophets who were forced to sing in exile for their captures?  Who were the Sons of Korah who escaped their father's destruction and became prolific songwriters? Find out in this collection of classics, Psalm 1 through 89.

When adapting true scripture lyrics to traditional hymn tunes, young musical tastes can create fresh style.  Use for unique theater or drama presentations, for an emphasis in counseling, for left-brain-right-brain interactive exercises, for character building memory work, or as a pastoral aid. For private meditation and for worship retreats!

Psalm Hymns reflect on the many loving-kindnesses of God and also contemplate the odd silences. Raw, classic prayers for a creative's portfolio. From the famous Psalm 5, Psalm 8, Psalm 23, Psalm 19 and Psalm 27 to the obscure Psalms: 1 to 4, or 9 through 17, and Psalms 35 and 36 onward, find the dramatic historical pleas of mortal souls together with their worship and praises in singing and recitation. Use this poetry for personal and communal reflection.

"The Psalms are prescribed and authorized for worship throughout God's kingdom, and without them, our worship is censored, uninformed and incomplete." - Timothy Raymond (editor for Credo Magazine, Indiana)

The first three of five volumes of the Davidic Psalms (Hebrew tradition) are set to the rhythm of Christian hymns of the English and American traditions. How would your faith change if you were to sing a psalm a day, evening or morning?  How would your community of faith be enriched if you were to include a psalm of historical context, testimony or lament to your services?

"Psalms," in the Hebrew means "Praises." Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 (HCSB)

The phrase, "teaching and admonishing", means there should be a place in our worship centers for historical education of the Psalms, performance, and discussion. Here, they expressly describe the wonders of God during terrifying events, illness, and betrayal, describing also God’s splendor in nature. They describe human relationships with God during life's miracles.

Turn Psalms 1-89 into a modern Psalter, sing or recite uncensored human pleas in fear and tragedy during the odd silences of God.

Uses include praise, education, character building texts, dramatic story-telling, a performance portfolio of knock-out scripts, brain teasing memorization, meditations, and laments for liturgy & retreats.

CHAPTER 1

Psalm 1

(A True Torah Piety Psalm)
You'll be safely on your way To avoid the scoffer's play;
Like a little tree will thrive Planted by the water's side,
Defenseless in God's court,
NOTES: Imagine a young soul as a seedling. Imagine that the Creator offers to fill the blank slate of the seed with good genes, to surround the pod with water and good soil, and to provide it with sunlight and good years of shade and fruit. These things represent the nurturing aspects of God's law with justice and mercy for all. The seed now has this astounding opportunity to embody the graces of its Creator, with all the Creator's values and benefits of life and to fruit in its season, if only the seedling agrees to grow by the laws of nature's God! That is the image portrayed in the metaphor of Psalm 1.

Psalm 1 has given me more pause for thought regarding how to rhyme and to convey its picturesque meaning than most of the psalms. What does "blessed" mean? Does it mean "lucid, prosperous, happy, connected to God"? What does "Do not stand in the way of sinners" mean? Does it mean don't block what sinners are doing?

Psalm 1 describes how we gain access to peace in the personal presence of YAHWEH-Shalom: "the Lord our peace" Judges 6:24. "Shalom" translated "peace" 170 times means "whole," "finished," "fulfilled," "perfected." related to "wellbeing, welfare." See, Deuteronomy 27:6; Daniel 5:26; I Kings 9:25 8:61; Genesis 15:16; Exodus 21:34, 22:5, 6; Leviticus 7:11-21. Shalom means that kind of peace resulting from being a whole person in right relationship with God and one's fellow man. This psalm is saying we are to avoid ungodly counselors and worldly wisdom when it doesn't agree with God's law. Don't make those who joke at others' expense or scoff about authority your best friends. Choose your companions and your counselors carefully. The source of life and love lies only in the hand of the Creator. If your friends mock God and advise you to choose an alternative lifestyle, you are presented with a choice of paths. Choose the law of God and you choose His blessing over your life and His love. Choose to rebel in ungodliness and you choose waste and demise.

Memories of my business-minded mother bribing her children to memorize whole Bible chapters make me smile. She paid us for each chapter with a unique silver dollar. This Psalm that helped to guide my life was one of the first chapters I memorized. Psalm 1 is a solid introduction in the benefits of godliness.

CHAPTER 2

Psalm 2

(A True Torah Piety Psalm, Messianic)
Why do the nations conspire?
From heaven's throne room, He laughs;
Sealing His own son as King:
Kiss now His Son to escape,
NOTE: Psalm 2 has the interesting phrase, "Kiss the Son," sometimes translated as "honor" or "worship." It is a haunting phrase. How can one kiss God's son? And, the alternative is God's anger! Yet, when an individual kisses someone else, it is a friendly and inclusive symbol. It may include worship, but it definitely signifies friendship. In some cultures, a loved one is greeted with a kiss. Is this friendship the kind of close relationship our government has with God? Do we? In everything we do, whether corporately or individually, we are to do it to the pleasure and glory of God. I believe God uses our talents, job, career and spouse to conform us to godliness. But, when things challenge us, a true test of loyalty versus ego ensues. Since it is much easier to serve ourselves with abandon and without care for our duty to God or others' welfare, the national ethos is deteriorated.

Too often the term "Christian" is applied to whole countries, political parties and social groups that lack intentional holiness, making the redemptive label confusing and anything but honorable. This is a nation in sin. The apostle Paul emphasizes godliness in his first letter to Timothy.

1. We are to pray for those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

2. We are to train ourselves to be godly. We are to pursue godliness. The word "pursue" indicates unrelenting, persevering effort.

3. Godliness with contentment is the standard for great gain; and finally,

4. Godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

I do not believe that godliness is some optional luxury for the quaint Puritan era, or for hermits, mystics or super saints of today. It is to the benefit of every person to pursue godliness, to train to be godly in everything, to analyze the practice of godliness in every love, in every choice, in every action.

CHAPTER 3

Psalm 3

(A Psalm of David's lament when he fled from his son Absalom)
Lord, look! All those who cast their lot,
I'm calling out to God who wills,
Lord, strike them all, don't hesitate,
NOTE: As we meditate on the Psalms we see "the wicked," "evil doers" and "enemies" slated for destruction, and we are compelled to compare this concept to Jesus' words, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." A more modern and politically correct theology may be: "Since God loves all people and because of the sovereignty of God's will to redeem all sinners, God will redeem all people." This is the challenge. Until we have integrated the message in the Psalms with the message of Jesus, we will not hold a cohesive biblical faith. Without integrity, what kind of faithfulness do we have?

The Psalms contain ancient tribal prayers which may have been written to God, but also used as evidence in an intermediary court by a priest or mediator between enemies. They reflect the plaintiff/defendant/accused's frames of mind, and may have been used by the judge to consider his or her complaint or plea.

CHAPTER 4

Psalm 4

(David's lament for evening worship with strings)
Father, answer me when I am calling;
Yes, the Lord has set apart the faithful,
Many doubt and savor speculation:
I will rest and I will dream reclining,
CHAPTER 5

Psalm 5

(A Morning Lament, for the Refuge of the Righteous for the Choir Director: with the flutes. A psalm of David.)
Oh, consider my expression,
Evil cannot dwell within You,
Bowing down toward Your temple,
Let them fall by their devices;
NOTES: The indication of the Psalms is that there is a precedent for a cycle of praying and singing each morning and evening or night. Psalm 92:2 says: "Declare Your loving-kindness in the morning And Your faithfulness by night." A friend of mine says she talks to God in her "prayer-mobile" going to and from work, praying for others and about her own day. Praise and worship music are helpful to bring us into that holy space.

Very godly people have cried out to God asking, "why?" begging God to listen and to see their plight. 1 Kings 19 describes how Elijah lied from the wicked queen, Jezebel, when she dispatched the prophets of YAHWEH to their deaths. He went a day's journey into the wilderness and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested God that he might die. "It is enough, oh Lord, take away my life. I am not better than my fathers." The book of Job, chapter 3, also recorded Job's abject misery causing him to say, "I wish I had never been born." We may have no idea why we suffer, why we may be heart-broken, paralyzed, targeted or diseased, and often God doesn't tell us why.

Job's story shows us that a spiritual battle was raging in the cosmos. Unknown to Job, his suffering was for the purpose of proving to Satan Job's faithfulness to God. God may not overtly disclose all His purposes to us. In Job's case, God restored to him double his losses. When Abraham's jealous wife, Sarah, ousted her handmaiden, Hagar, to die in the desert with a babe at her breast, Hagar cried out to God against the injustice, and God responded, "I see you. I will bless you and your son." God does see our suffering. We can trust Him to be true.

CHAPTER 6

Psalm 6

(One of David's Penitent Prayers for Mercy with stringed instruments; for the ill)
LORD, do not be rebuff me in Your anger;
Turn, oh Lord! Now rescuing, restore me;
All these days have filled my eyes with sorrow Swollen grief has swelled my eyes;
Yes, the Lord has heard my quiet weeping;
NOTE: Psalm 6 features YAHWEH Rapha – The Lord is our Healer. He heals in many ways, but always, the credit belongs to the LORD. Sometimes our cries for help are limited to relief, yet God's good answers are often broader and more complete than our vision.

Isaiah 41:10 - Fear not; for I am with you: do not be dismayed; for I am your God: 1 will strengthen you; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness.

Jeremiah 17:14 - Heal me, oh Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for You are my praise.

1 Peter 2:24 - Who His own self bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live by and cleave to righteousness: by whose stripes you were healed.

Jeremiah 33:6 - Watch this, I will bring health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth.

Isaiah 53:5 - But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.

Psalms 103:2-4 - Bless the Lord, oh my soul, and do not forget all His benefits: —

James 5:14-15 - Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the LORD: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

3 John 1:2 - Loved ones, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.

Proverbs 17:22 - A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit shrivels the bones.

Luke, Jesus' disciple, was a physician.
