Overview

Well known for providing a thorough yet concise view of the natural history of psychiatric disorders, this popular text has been completely updated chapter by chapter in this Fifth Edition. Terminology has been revised in line with DSM IV and many recent genetic and neurobiological findings have been included. Some of the areas where there is new material are: genetics and neuroimaging of schizophrenia, combined use of benzodiazepines and neuroleptics in treating schizophrenia, development of antisocial personality, neuropsychological changes in AIDS patients, genetics of Alzheimer's disease, prognosis for delirium in the elderly, and epidemiologyu of anorexia nervosa. As in previous editions, each chapter systematically covers the definition, historical background, epidemiology, clinical picture, natural history, complications, family studies, differential diagnosis, and clinical management of each disorder. The use of follow-up studies to classify psychiatric disorders is emphasized. No other text provides such a lucid, well-documented and critically sound overview of the major syndromes in psychiatry. About the Author

Donald W. Goodman, M.D., is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Kansas.
Samuel B. Guze, M.D., is Spencer T. Olin Professor of Psychiatry and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine. He is also Psychiatrist and Chief of Barnes and Jewish Hospitals at the Washington University Medical Center.

With the publication of DSM-IV, Goodwin and Guze's classic text has been updated. This new fifth edition looks at the major psychiatric diagnoses using the latest diagnostic terms. The purpose is to provide ^^a concise compendium of current knowledge in psychiatry,^^ according to the authors. This book is a valuable resource, providing great detail into each of the major psychiatric diagnoses. This book is specifically targeted to psychiatric residents; however, with each revision corresponding with updated information in the field of psychiatry, this book also is useful for the practicing clinician. The authors are both from Washington University and are authorities in the diagnosis of psychiatric illnesses. Each chapter focuses specifically on a type of diagnosis, with the exception of the last chapter, which focuses on the mental status exam. Within each chapter, information on historical background, clinical picture, epidemiology, natural history, complications, and clinical management is provided. Each chapter ends with an extensive list of updated references. The text is well written, and the overall organization is simple, straightforward, and easily comprehensible. Several definitions and tables are provided when necessary. As a resident in the process of mastering my skills in diagnosing psychiatric illnesses, I find this book extremely useful, especially the clinical picture and differential diagnoses sections of each chapter. In my opinion, this book should be a required standard text for each resident in training. I also highly recommend that health science libraries and bookstores carry this book, because to my knowledge there are not many texts of this naturefocusing specifically on diagnosis.
