Description: Now in its ninth edition, this book is organized into four units, which propel readers from foundational theories and concepts to the establishment of the nurse-client relationship, through an exploration of current social and emotional concerns, and ultimately orient readers to the nursing care of individuals with psychiatric disorders. Chapters begin with learning objectives to help establish the purpose of each chapter, as well as key terms and nursing concepts to help focus readers' attention. Critical thinking questions, key points, and chapter study guides provide support to learners as they master the content of each chapter.
Purpose: The book is responsive to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM), which is to be incorporated in its next generation NCLEX (NGN) exam. Chapter content supports nursing programs in their efforts to integrate the clinical judgment model. This is particularly prevalent in the "thinking like a nurse" sections of sample care plans, which help students to learn how clinical judgment can be used through the incorporation of evidence-based practices. The book seems to support concept-based curricula.
Audience: Various audiences will find this book particularly useful, but, most notably, entry-into-practice RN students. The book is well situated to assist in the acquisition of psychiatric mental health nursing knowledge essential to the learners developing clinical competence in this area. Other nursing professionals may find this book useful, such as staff development professionals who may be seeking to develop a comprehensive transition program for nurses who have worked in other areas to the psychiatric mental health nursing arena. Additionally, staff development professionals may use individual chapters to help nurses in a variety of different clinical settings deal with challenges they face with new and emerging patient populations.
Features: Each chapter begins with "nursing concepts," which help to set the stage for how the content will apply to concept-based curricula. The use of clinical vignettes helps to demonstrate to the readers how various concepts may be seen in actual patient presentations. The "plan of care" section demonstrates how to plan care for clients with specific psychiatric mental health issues. Additionally useful to learners are the drug alerts and warning boxes, which highlight areas of caution specific to psychotropic drug administration and United States Food and Drug Administration black box warnings, respectively. Additionally, age-related considerations are included as relevant to address the unique needs of children, adolescents, and the older adult population. Client and family education boxes help to enhance the student's role as a nurse educator. Additionally, evidence-based practice boxes frame current evidence-based practice research on a variety of contemporary practice issues. Of particular importance are the "self-awareness issues" areas, which invite readers to reflect on themselves as individuals, as well as their emotions and attitudes, which have the potential to impact their relationships with clients and the health system.
Assessment: There are a variety of psychiatric mental health nursing books that readers can choose from. This particular volume is well written with a variety of "extras" that can support concept-based curricula. It is also important to note that the book itself is visually stunning and does not give one the impression they are being overwhelmed by information. Tables, illustrations, and a variety of other features help to break up the readings in such a way as to prevent the readers from becoming overwhelmed.
