About the Author

Iain Boag has worked in the homeless and residential care sectors since 2001, he is Head of Residential Care Services at St Martins in Norwich. Almost 20 years' experience of working on the frontline of homeless and care services has given him invaluable insight into the challenges that homelessness, substance misuse and poor mental health bring, and of how best to support people with complex needs. Specialising in working with dual-diagnosis, Iain is committed to improving outcomes for the most marginalised and hard to reach.

Iain lives in Norwich with his wife and two children.

Description: This is an excellent resource for person-centered care in adults with dual diagnoses in residential care settings. Rather than sticking to the usual cache of psychotropic medicines, the book discusses the root cause of behaviors and trauma and recommends use of the PIE system to build a new normal for residents.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce managers and frontline staff in residential care homes to the use of the PIE model in person-centered care and champion and inspire those who are already practicing these ideas. The objectives are to examine all facets of the behavioral health environment in a group home setting, including nutrition, literal environment, and staffing. The book meets its objectives and paints a picture of how staff can incorporate these principles through example and attention to detail.
Audience: The audience is managers, clinicians, and caregivers for the adult population generally experiencing mental illness, substance abuse, and/or addiction. The book meets the needs of the audience by describing clients and their unique experiences and challenges that are found in every residential care home. There is insufficient evidence of the author's scholastic credibility; however, it is clear he has done his research and years of education and experience have lent an expertise not otherwise drawn from theory alone.
Features: The book begins with an introduction to Highwater House, a residential care facility, and an explanation of the PIE method. The author discusses how, often in many cases, clients are subject to trauma and psychological damage simply from spending years in the state system, noting particularly that the more assessments done, the greater the limitations to the resident. The author then goes on to explore the negative factors involved, including the institutional rhetoric of reformation in behavioral health—negative + negative will somehow equal a positive, and of course, it rarely does. The author looks at relationships, staffing, physical environment, and nutrition as key points for evaluation and reassessment and application of the PIE system. He follows this with evidence of success, again with specific examples to give it credibility. There are no shortcomings to the book other than I wish it was longer. The author has a lot of information to share and I feel like this book is merely the tip of the iceberg.
Assessment: There are few books in the field that discuss the inner workings of client care in residential group settings. To get a firsthand, honest look at the challenges and successes of one home is inspiring and exciting to think similar practices could be implemented in other places.
