Description: In this book, the authors describe the purpose, action, side-effects, dosing, contraindications, considerations for special populations, and risks in prescribing specific classes of medication. The layout is very well organized. It provides the reader with a succinct but thorough description of types of medication used to manage seizure disorders, hyperactivity, pain management, memory loss, and Parkinsonian symptoms. This is not a drug book describing common psychotropic medications used to manage mental disorders.
Purpose: The purpose is to inform practicing psychologists and graduate students about medications prescribed to populations with whom they work.
Audience: The psychologist is provided with the knowledge needed to assess the effect a medication is having on a patient. An example is given in the text of the need for a school psychologist to recognize the effect anticonvulsant medication can have on learning. It is not my impression that psychologists will be prescribing these medications. Many of the medications examined in the book are medications commonly prescribed by neurologists for neurological conditions. It is rather that the psychologists will need to understand the impact these medications have on a patient. The neurologist would prescribe them.
Features: The book is unique in its description of drugs such as heroin. The anticonvulsants and the Parkinsonian drugs are well covered. Valproic acid is recognized as an anticonvulsant but not as a mood stabilizer. Newer drugs, such as the nootropics, are identified in the text.
Assessment: This book is certainly a useful text for any advanced practitioner's desk as an easy reference tool to obtain a quick grasp of a broad variety of neuropsychotropic drugs. It is very satisfying to see the special populations of pregnant and nursing women, the elderly and the frail, and children and adolescents considered. I will use this text as a reference tool.
