Description: This is an excellent and exciting new book, written by internationally recognized authorities in the field, that reviews the scientific study of mental disorders in light of recent developments in molecular genetics, cognitive neuroscience, neurochemistry, and neuroanatomy.
Purpose: The purpose of the book, according to one of the editors, is to "celebrate the coming of age in our field." This book "...shows plainly that psychopathology has joined the ranks of the mature sciences, both in canons of scientific evidence and in ingenuity of experimental design." The editors want to convey their excitement about developments in the field. They have succeeded.
Audience: The intended audience is graduate students, clinicians, and researchers in the fields of psychiatry, cognitive science, and neuroscience.
Features: The book features 633 pages divided into four major themes in psychopathology research: brain mechanisms, development, thinking, and genetics. Each chapter ends with useful and up-to-date references. There is a very useful author and subject index at the back of the book. The only criticism I have is that the main focus is on schizophrenia. The other psychopathologies are hardly addressed.
Assessment: This is an exceptional new book on the science of mental disorders, reviewing the current knowledge base of a major psychosis, schizophrenia. Anyone who wants to keep abreast of developments in the scientific understanding of psychopathology should own this book.
