Keegan (Enduring Culture: A Century of Photography of the Southwest Indians, LJ 4/15/91) has worked as a photographer in New Mexico for over a quarter of a century, fostering trusting relationships with the Pueblo people. Her privileged access allows a close-up view of the Pueblos without infringing on the strict privacy maintained by the people. These photographs are typical of Keegan's work: formal portraits, public dances, and landscapes. Like Edward S. Curtis a century ago, Keegan is both nostalgic and intimate, presenting the traditional lifestyle rather than a disrupted or less picturesque view of the Pueblos.
