James C. Bradford is a professor of history at Texas A&M and a respected specialist in American maritime, naval, and military history in the early national period of American history. He is the editor of many books on military history, including Quarterdeck and Bridge. He lives in College Station, TX.

The essays review the careers of admirals from Esek Hopkins to David Dixon Porter to Chester Nimitz to Elmo Zumwalt. Instead of reviewing their careers from a historical perspective, the writers look at the leadership and philosophical aspects and show how these men shaped and influence the direction of the navy. For example, due to his strong determination, Rickover brought the navy into the nuclear age, while Zumwalt used his famous "Z-grams" to improve the life and morale of the navy's enlisted personnel. While this book might be out of place in a general-interest library, it could be an important addition to libraries dealing with military science and leadership or libraries with strong leadership and management collections.Terry L.
