It is informative yet succinct, detailing vital information and highlighting the "need to know" facts. The book is accompanied by a website with an ebook version. The website search tool makes it easy to find needed information. It also allows readers to highlight sections and make flashcards, which facilitates the study of renal transplantation and promotes long-term retention of information.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a concise resource on the workup and management of renal transplant patients. The formatting makes it unique and valuable as it emphasizes concepts clearly without long-winded paragraphs. As a result, it can be used not only as a quick reference, but also as a study guide for fellows. The online version means that readers can access the book from anywhere. The ability to highlight text makes it easy to review material and create flashcards, so users can assess what they think is important to study.
Audience: The book is written for clinicians — particularly general nephrologists — who help care for renal transplant recipients. Given its abbreviated, bulleted text, the book would be great for renal fellows studying for their ITE and boards. It is very comprehensive, detailing basic immunology, immunosuppression, and post-transplant care, and includes advice on when to begin daily activities like gardening after transplant. The book includes well-organized tables, easy-to-follow flowcharts, and cleanly labeled diagrams that help illustrate points and reinforce concepts. The book is very thorough. It does not go into depth about surgery, but very clearly outlines steps leading up to surgery and following it.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource. It is thorough yet concise and well outlined to make the subject matter more manageable. It is unique in that it can be used as a study of guide of sorts, helpful to nephrology fellows and recertifying nephrologists. It is unique in its ability to highlight major points of interest in a bulleted format, in comparison to some of the textbooks, such as Comprehensive Clinical Nephrology, 6th edition, Feehally et al. (Elsevier, 2019), and Brenner and Rector's The Kidney, 10th edition, Skorecki et al. (Elsevier, 2016).
