About the Author

Antonia F. Chen, MD, MBA received her bachelor of science degree from Yale University. She then received her medical degree from UMDNJ–Robert Wood Johnson, where she graduated with Distinction in Research and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Antonia also received her master of business administration degree from Rutgers Business School and graduated as a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. She is currently an orthopedic resident at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to clinical duties, her research interests are in arthroplasty and periprosthetic joint infections; she has delivered many podium presentations and posters on the national stage. Antonia has also received numerous awards during residency, including research awards and the Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. She has served as a resident liaison for the membership committee in the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Antonia hopes to pursue a rewarding career as an academic arthroplasty surgeon.

Description: This dictionary of orthopedic terminology is laid out first as an alphabetical listing of common terms followed by a series of 25 appendixes covering a wide range of items, from common abbreviations to common fracture classifications and casting pearls.
Purpose: Although designed to be a quick reference for junior residents and medical students, this book also will come in handy for orthopedic secretarial staff who need to know what they are writing during a dictation or when communicating with attending physicians.
Audience: In addition to junior orthopedic residents, medical students on rotation and office staff may find this dictionary helpful. Dr. Chen is a resident who claims Freddie Fu of the University of Pittsburgh as a mentor. She understands firsthand the needs of a resident, but also has the opportunity to seek the guidance of the chairman of one of the most prestigious training programs in the U.S.
Features: In addition to the alphabetic listing of definitions of terms, the appendixes include quick references on anatomy, abbreviations, physical exam standards, and a series of how-to guides on techniques such as joint aspiration, casting, bracing, and traction pin placement. I can envision the orthopedic first years paging through it as they run to the emergency room or just before speaking to their attendings or senior residents. In this day and age, it would be nice if there were a version that could be uploaded to a smartphone or iPad.
