Overview

"Raised By Wolves: A Pack Odyssey" is the story of the first four years of a pioneering, ongoing research study and life with wolves that has continued for nearly twenty-five years. In this scholarly yet poetically personal book, psychologist/wolf ethologist CJ Rogers takes the reader into the creation of her first wolf pack, and then into the secret splendors of pack life itself. In complete contrast with works that portray humans as "super-alphas" to wolves, Rogers recognizes that she is a humble apprentice, then disciple. The wild and the wisdom of the ancient wolf archetype is awakened, unmasking the injustice of the longstanding "big bad wolf" stereotype.
The pack odyssey--set in the alluring geography of New Mexico's diverse beguiling landscapes--is full of colorful characters, surprises, humor, and heartbreak. Rogers is blessed, challenged, and forever changed by unexpected shared experiences with the wolves and the unbreakable bonds that even death cannot undo. The initiation and integration into the life of a wolf pack crosses a threshold into another culture, a different world--ancient and mysterious yet curiously familiar, transcending boundaries of space, time, and species.

About the Author

CJ Rogers has lived with and studied wolves and wolf hybrids in New Mexico since 1992. In 1996, she established and became research director of Raised By Wolves, Inc., a nonprofit, licensed research sanctuary in the Zuni Mountains of New Mexico. In 1999, Rogers’s long-term study of wolves resulted in the discovery and development of an alternative model for pack dynamics based on complexity theory. Her research adds to the understanding of the highly sophisticated culture of wolves and benefits efforts to protect the survival of wolves in the wild.
In a PBS special called The Promise of Play, a featured segment highlighted the research being done by Rogers at Raised By Wolves. In 2010, Rogers’s research papers and related material were acquired by the Brian Sutten-Smith Library and Archives at the Strong Museum (since renamed the National Museum of Play) in New York, who recognized Rogers’s ongoing wolf research as the most detailed study of wolves ever done.
CJ Rogers holds doctorates in psychology and behavioral ecology and has taught and guest lectured at a number of universities. Her articles and interviews have appeared in a variety of professional journals and newspapers.
