Description: Now in its eighth edition, this book presents current information on the art of respiratory pharmacology as well as drugs that can affect pulmonary patients. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: A standard tool in respiratory education, this edition is up to date, including relevant sleep pharmacology in an expanding area of this field.
Audience: Although written for students and instructors, this book also will be helpful to practitioners as a current reference. The well laid out text, companion CD, and workbook are assets for students and instructors.
Features: The 23 chapters are well formatted with key terms, key points, self-assessment questions, and case scenarios that challenge all readers not only to learn the material, but also to critically apply it. Unique to this edition is the addition of picture art to the well-illustrated diagrams to depict the devices used in this field. Well designed tables provide lists of particular drugs in a specific category, along with their effects. All of these features help readers better understand the material. One possible shortcoming is the omission of answers to self assessment questions, which would help students firm up their knowledge and point to where more review is needed.
Assessment: The editor has done an incredible job revising this edition. It is a highly valuable book in respiratory education that also can serve as a reference in medical libraries for practicing professionals.
