Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol teams, or LRRPs (pronounced “Lerps”), were used to scout Vietcong positions during the Vietnam War. After a tough training regimen, these guys had to go on even tougher missions. This memoir by a participant gives the listener a peek into the messy business of war. His training is brutal, and the patrols are fraught with danger and death. When one patrol has his team scouting an enemy position on a mountain during a thunderstorm, they’re all hit by lightning and are evacuated. Hallas has a deep, soft voice that is understated in his delivery. Minimally expressive, this production sounds more like a report than a memoir. M.T.F. © AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine
