This updated directory recognised that the number of religious groups would not remain static as population increases, urbanization, and immigration continue to provide a nurturing environment for new religious expressions. This new edition will fill an information gap and provide basic data about each religious group and be regularly updated as changes in the religious community dictate (annually or bi-annually).

This revised update of Melton and James V. Geisendorfer's A Directory of Religious Bodies in the United States ( LJ 1/15/78) aims at providing names, headquarters addresses, phone numbers, and brief descriptions of every religious body operating in the United States. It is divided into sections on interfaith organizations, individual denominations, and periodicals. Entries are alphabetical and often include cable and fax numbers. Alternative names are cross-referenced or found in the index. Unlike Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches (Abingdon Pr., 1990 ), this directory omits detailed lists of offices and officers, but it does include over 1300 bodies not found in the Yearbook .
