Overview

Fifteen years after the release of the first Mediator novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot returns with a deliciously sexy new entry to a fan-favorite series. Suze Simon-all grown up and engaged to her once-ghostly soulmate-faces a vengeful spirit and an old enemy bent on ending Suze's wedded bliss before it begins.

You can take the boy out of the darkness.

But you can't take the darkness out of the boy.

All Susannah Simon wants is to make a good impression at her first job since graduating from college (and since becoming engaged to Dr. Jesse de Silva).

But when she's hired as a guidance counselor at her alma mater, she stumbles across a decade-old murder, and soon ancient history isn't all that's coming back to haunt her. Old ghosts as well as new ones are coming out of the woodwork, some to test her, some to vex her, and it isn't only because she's a mediator, gifted with second sight.

From a sophomore haunted by the murderous specter of a child, to ghosts of a very different kind-including Paul Slater, Suze's ex, who shows up to make a bargain Suze is certain must have come from the Devil himself-Suze isn't sure she'll make it through the semester, let alone to her wedding night.

Suze is used to striking first and asking questions later. But what happens when ghosts from her past-including one she found nearly impossible to resist-strike first?

What happens when old ghosts come back to haunt you?

If you're a mediator, you might have to kick a little ass.

Cabot's successful and beloved "Mediator" series graduates from the YA genre into a long-anticipated adult installment, seventh in the series (after Haunted and Twilight). Susannah, or as her fan base knows her, Suze, is now engaged to Dr. Hector "Jesse" de Silva. For those unfamiliar with the story, Jesse was a NCDP (noncompliant deceased person) with whom Suze fell in love. She has long had the gift of seeing and talking to ghosts since high school. Now, though, our protagonist is trying her best to have a normal adult life after graduating college and becoming a guidance counselor. However, both old and new ghosts, including her ex-boyfriend Paul Slater, put a wrinkle in her happy ending. VERDICT This novel stands well enough on its own, but a desire to read the whole series is irrefutable, and some may find it a little daunting to start with an ending of sorts. Cabot's great writing, as always, is captivating from the beginning, replete with fun and mysterious personalities. Fans of the series will be rewarded for their patience to hear from these characters again. [See Prepub Alert, 8/24/15.]—Anne M. Miskewitch, Chicago P.L.

In this latest "Mediator" novel, Susannah Simon has begun her first job as a guidance counselor intern at a Catholic school. She has the ability to see souls of the dead who have unfinished business on earth, and she has helped them pass from this world to the next since she was a toddler. Early in the novel, Susannah sees Lucia, a ghost who is protecting a student at her school, and uncovers that Lucia had been murdered. While Susannah works on solving the murder, she and Jesse, a ghost who haunted her childhood home for 150 years and whom she brought back to life, are making plans to marry. There is an abundance of characters for readers to follow, many of whom are also mediators. One of these, a high school nemesis, is planning to tear down Susannah's childhood home, convinced that this will unleash some unknown malevolent behavior from Jesse. Susannah is a feisty character, prone to swearing and imploring Jesse to consummate their relationship (he wants to wait until they are married) and adept at navigating her way through the obstacles thrown in her way. VERDICT Hand this to fans of the series and to those who enjoy a fast-paced story full of twists and turns.—Jane Ritter, Mill Valley School District, CA

Suze Simon faces a curse and an angry ghost in the first adult installment of Cabot's Mediator series (Twilight, 2004, etc.). School counselor-in-training Suze may be a mediator—that is, a person who helps spirits move on to the afterlife—but the biggest thing going on in her life right now is her engagement to her hunky (and formerly dead) fiance, Jesse de Silva. Or at least it would be if problems didn't keep getting in the way. One of the unwelcome visitors from the past is her sometime nemesis Paul, who has plans to unleash a curse that might turn Jesse from a caring medical resident into a demon—that is, unless Suze can agree to Paul's demands. As if that isn't enough, Suze is also dealing with a particularly tricky young NCDP (noncompliant deceased person) who has a habit of attacking Suze and her loved ones. Add in plenty of family drama, and it's a lot for anyone to handle—but Suze faces it all with heavy doses of attitude, ass-kicking, and profanity. The mysterious death Suze investigates is truly creepy, and the case's conclusion is surprisingly dark. Mostly, though, this is an entertaining, funny, and fast-paced chapter in Suze's life. Although the book leaves Suze in a happy place, readers will find themselves hoping to read about more of her drama and her fights with NCDPs in the future. A fun and satisfying grown-up update on Suze's life.
