Purpose: The role of nephrology in the intensive care unit is reviewed.
Audience: Trainees and practitioners desiring a concise overview will find this book from practitioners in the U.K. attractive.
Features: The initial chapters focus on evaluation of renal injury and function. Subsequent chapters discuss sources of renal insufficiency in patients in the intensive care unit (including postoperative patients), trauma and rhabdomyolysis, and drug-induced renal injury. Concluding chapters describe various renal replacement therapies including plasma exchange, continuous and intermittent dialysis, and the management of complications including hyperkalemia, hypokalemia, hypernatremia and hyponatremia. Acid-base abnormalities are discussed in the final chapter. Chapters are clearly written and use color and texture of type to identify subheadings. Tables are frequently used to summarize key information. Flow diagrams, chest x-rays, and line drawings are occasionally used. Each chapter contains a reference list based on primary literature. In some cases, the reference list is modest given the content in the chapter.
Assessment: This is an excellent introduction to an important problem faced in day-to-day critical care. Readers will find a concise review of renal pathophysiology in the ICU and an overview of available therapies. This is that "quick" read one needs if trying to understand the scope of renal disease in critical care practice.
