About the Author

Randell Alexander is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Florida and the Morehouse School of Medicine. He currently serves as chief of the Division of Child Protection and Forensic Pediatrics and interim chief of the Division of Developmental Pediatrics at the University of Florida-Jacksonville. In addition, he is the statewide medical director of child protections teams for the Department of Health's Children's Medical Services and is part of the International Advisory Board for the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome. He has also served as vice chair of the US Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect, on the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect, and the boards of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) and Prevent Child Abuse America. Randell Alexander has served on state child death review committees in Iowa, Georgia, and Florida, and two regional child death review committees. He is an active researcher, lectures widely, and testifies frequently in major child abuse cases throughout the country.

Description: This volume on research and practices related to child maltreatment prevention is meant for providers and researchers who are working on devising programs to prevent child maltreatment. It also provides means to document and follow measurable outcomes regarding the efficacy of the programs.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide background and approaches to organize programs for child maltreatment prevention. As a provider who has cared for infants and children after they present to the hospital as victims of child maltreatment for 30 years, I definitely find this a worthy objective, which the book meets.
Audience: The audience is providers, administrators, and researchers of every discipline who work to prevent child maltreatment. This is not the book for the casual reader whose goal is to learn the basics of child maltreatment. It is more for the experienced provider who is working to organize an initiative or program to prevent child maltreatment. The authors and contributors are very credible authorities in this area and have worked very hard to accomplish their goal.
Features: This book addresses the means and tools to devise a program at an organizational level to prevent child maltreatment. The chapters provide information at community and societal levels for the people involved with putting a prevention program together.
Assessment: This is an important, relevant, and helpful book for providers in every discipline including social workers, administrators, and providers involved with organizing a program that emphasizes prevention of child maltreatment. This is a different focus than a lot of the clinical information in the literature that helps providers identify and manage child maltreatment in the community.
