This book encourages individualization, which is difficult to achieve with more prescriptive approaches. This second edition includes chapters on cognitively impaired adults, ethical issues, and patient-centered care, all of which are so important in long-term care. The purpose of restorative care nursing (often referred to as function-focused care) is to take an active role in helping older adults maintain their highest level of function, thereby preventing excess disability. About the Author

Barbara Resnick, PhD, CRNP, FGSA, FAANP, FAAN, is Professor, Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health, University of Maryland School of Nursing, and co-directs the Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Program and the Biology and Behavior Across the Lifespan Research Center of Excellence. She holds the Sonya Ziporkin Gershowitz Chair in Gerontology, and does clinical work at Roland Park Place.

Marie Boltz, PhD, RN, GNP-BC, FGSA, FAAN, is the Elouise Ross Eberly and Robert Eberly Endowed Chair Professor, Penn State College of Nursing, where she teaches both gerontological nursing and PhD courses. She is a gerontological nurse consultant at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the Office of Inspector General, and the Department of Justice, and a senior nurse scientist at the Munn Center for Nursing Research, Massachusetts General Hospital.

Description: This book distinguishes itself from the typical technical/task-oriented manual by describing how to develop a restorative nursing program that is function-focused and detailing the interventions to help older adults realize their highest level of functioning. The philosophical approach really promotes caring about the individual, not just giving care to the individual.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate caregivers in a different philosophy of care, one that promotes beneficial activities through motivating strategies that are individualized for each elder. This is a giant step in the move toward not only person-centered care, but also person-directed care. The book stimulates thinking beyond what is on the printed page.
Audience: The authors intend the book for formal and informal caregivers, which is appropriate. It is suitable for anyone who works with older adults. The authors have the experience, education, and passion for elders that make them credible authorities in the area of function-focused restorative care.
Features: The book covers strategies for helping older adults maintain the highest practicable level of physical functioning in any setting and with varying levels of physical and cognitive abilities. A strength of the book is the way it addresses different settings and describes the philosophy, goals, and interventions that motivate the individual. The appendixes for each setting are simple and direct, giving practical examples.
