This 1931 novel by Brand takes the reader back to the frontier West. A little north of the Mexican border surrounded by the mountains lies a ranch with every potential for success. However, the calculated mismanagement and cunning trickery of the ranch's foreman, Douglas Walters, causes this same prosperous land to teeter on the edge of ruin. Walters goes so far as to keep a gang of outlaws waiting in the hills to rustle the cattle across the border and thus drain every asset from the ranch's owners, the Ashe family. By chance, Jim Seton meets Molly Ashe on his return from a five-year prison sentence. Seton sees an opportunity to prove his worth; all he has to do is save the ranch from the clutches of Walters and his gang. Not an easy task for one man, since the Ashe family views Walters as an able foreman and friend. Brand is in his element in this action-packed Western, ably read by Bill Weideman.
