In this volume the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), the insulin receptor, and a specialized category of potassium channel are discussed. The goal of this continuing series is to provide authoritative reviews of selected topics in modern biology. This book would benefit anyone working in the fields of physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology. The focus of the CFTR review is on epithelial transport, and a discussion of chloride, sodium, potassium, and water management is included. A brief recapitulation of the cloning of the gene serves as the chapter introduction; the transport sections conclude with an extrapolation targeting the pathophysiology of defects in this protein. The appended bibliography is detailed and thorough and the review should be of value to investigators in the direct area as well as those in peripheral fields. The chapter is marred by an incorrect running title. The review of the insulin receptor focuses on the role in metabolic signaling events and is detailed and comprehensive. As with the initial chapter, this is accompanied by a detailed bibliography. There is a general discussion of the structure of the receptor and the various associated proteins that transmit signals from it. The chapter concludes with a discussion of Type II diabetes, particularly apropos as this defect is generally regarded as a receptor abnormality. The final chapter is a review of current knowledge on the minK and KvLQT1 proteins and their cooperative action in potassium control. The three topics covered in this volume do not present a unifying theme. However, investigators working in any of the areas discussed will find these reviews timely andcomprehensive.
