Description: This entry in the Secrets series covers most of the common and rare diseases, pathological processes, and up-to-date treatments in rheumatology in a very thorough manner, using a Socratic question and answer format.
Purpose: The purpose is to cover common and uncommon rheumatic diseases encountered in practice, in discussions in teaching rounds, and on board examinations. It includes contemporary pathophysiology, disease manifestations, and practical management isssues. The objective of this book, to essentially cover most aspects of rheumatology in a user-friendly and enjoyable format are worthwhile and well-accomplished by the authors.
Audience: This book would serve as a valuable resource to any student or medical practitioner interested in rheumatic diseases. It would most suitably serve medical students and residents in a rheumatology elective. However, it would also be valuable as a review source at the fellow and attending level in preparation for board examinations. The editor and the contributing authors are well known in the field of rheumatology and serve as credible authorities on the topics covered in this book.
Features: This book covers most aspects of rheumatology, from basic science immunology to clinical practice, in a thorough and up-to-date manner. The book is divided into 16 sections grouped by common themes. The most attractive aspect of this book is its readability. The Socratic style of brief questions and answers allows coverage of most aspects of diseases with the ability to pick up and set down the book readily. The primary shortcoming of this book is that its thoroughness has caused it to become too large to serve as a "pocket" manual while the question and answer format make it less attractive as a compendious desktop resource.
Assessment: I found this book quite well written and edited and a useful tool to cover common and uncommon rheumatic diseases. It compares very favorably with most other introductory rheumatology books available. It also provides the unique advantage of being able to be read during short down times such as between patients or prior to rounds. The constantly changing practice of medicine, including rheumatology, make frequently revised editions justified.
