Against this background the contributing authors describe and discuss the immunological and pathological changes which occur in rhinitis. The various causes and the types of rhinitis - such as allergic, vasomotor, and infectious - are discussed as are the treatments available (pharmacotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery). The book concludes with a description of the animal models of rhinitis which are now available. This book will be of interest to bench scientists and clinicians alike.

This volume of the Respiratory Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy series reviews the pathophysiology and therapy of rhinitis. There is no preface stating the book's purpose. The initial chapters describe the normal anatomy, pathophysiology, and immunology of the nose and paranasal sinuses. The next chapters focus on inflammation in rhinitis and various causes and pharmacologic therapies of allergic, vasomotor, and infectious rhinitis. The final chapters review allergen immunotherapy, surgery, and animal models of rhinitis. This book is written for clinicians and bench scientists interested in rhinitis. The most probable clinical audience would be allergist-immunologists and otolaryngologists. The chapter authors, primarily European, are credible authorities in their subject areas. The book contains an appropriate number of figures, drawings, tables, and photographs to illustrate pertinent points. In general, the references are current and pertinent. The book's appearance is simple, but attractive. In summary, this is a compendium of review chapters on various aspects of rhinitis from basic anatomy, physiology, and immunology through clinical types of rhinitis and their treatment; the book concludes with a description of available animal models of rhinitis.
