Overview

Born 1935 in Florida, Rufus begins life with a face only his momma, Misca seems to love…definitely not the cute kitten type people choose to take home. Momma Misca wisely teaches Rufus all she knows about surviving in the world of humans, reassuring him often "looks aren't everything". Three times chance and circumstance cause Rufus to be adopted by human misfits, struggling with dark emotional secrets and money woes. Mike: an insecure, orphaned shrimp fisherman, living aboard the Fannie Belle with his singing side kick George. Boris: a stuttering grave robber hiding in the family crypt. Sybil: a fiesty gypsy dancer, fearful of becoming a lab speciman. Without choice Rufus melds himself into each trouble filled life as a working cat. Relying on his momma's lessons for living, a few mental and physical assets of his own, Rufus releases a powerful, positive energy. Problems vanish, money pours in. Those not understanding how a gifted mind works, label Rufus a sorcerer. This presents problems old as time itself, but new for young Rufus to overcome. Jealousy, hunger, hate and fear stalk his very existence, until rescued by the beautiful Sybil. As the United States enters W.W.II young men in uniform were everywhere, including some watching, when Sybil's stage accidentally catches on fire during her dance performance. This becomes the catalyst for Rufus to discover his paternal roots, his true destiny and realize, he never was just an ordinary feline.

About the Author

J. Nina McKinnon came into this world December 1926, birthed in a tiny "cracker style" house in a remote and sparsely settled area of Flagler County, Florida. The meager dwelling had no close human neighbors, however marsh and magnolia filled woods supported abundant wildlife. Whippoorwills welcomed the night, in which panther screams often pierced the dark, as daylight exposed bear tracks about the cabin. In 1928 the family of seven moved to Volusia County settling in the Daytona Beach/Port Orange areas. Pristine white sand beaches, and the Halifax River, became an important part of the family lifestyle. Ruins and relics left by Indians and early Spanish settlers piqued her imagination, happily filling her childhood years during the Great Depression, while instilling a deep appreciation for local history. Attending public schools, she began writing short stories and poems in the sixth grade. Articles about her families life during the Great Depression were published by the local newspaper. She now resides near the beautiful Nature Coast in West Florida, with a big orange cat named Rufus.
