What a fun alphabet series from Capstone Press! We've all seen series like this before — "A is for..." and so on — but this book by Laurie Purdie Salas is uniquely creative and well done. I also think it's very appealing because so many kids are sports nuts (or at least their parents are but that's a whole 'nother post). One thing I love about these books is the big, full-page pictures. They really make you feel like you're in the game. And it's not just fluff information - it gives some really good statistics about sports and covers everything from track and field to snow skiing to hockey. Even the X Games are mentioned. Like all the titles in this series, it provides a glossary, bibliography and related internet sites (safe because they're researched through Fact Hound). Reading is fun but it's even better if it piques your interest and makes you want to learn more! Other titles in this series are Y is for Yowl (which I've reviewed before and due to the subject matter it got a thumbs down), A is for Arrr, C is for Cake, P is for Pom Pom and Z is for Zoom. The reading level is for Grades 1 - 2.
