SAILING MAGAZINE:
Earning the Golden Sail: It is the goal of many of us--retiring from the rat race, buying a sailboat, and sailing off into the sunset. But the questions loom large. What type of boat? Where do we sail? How will we manage?
These are all questions sailing contributor, Matts Djos and his wife Jeanine, faced when he retired in 2006 and his search for answers is recorded in his new book, "Sailing Out of Retirement."
Starting with a trailerable Balboa 26 , Matts and Jeanine move up to a Mariner 31 ketch, which they restore and fit out for cruising. Some of the chapters have appeared previously in SAILING Magazine and may be familiar to readers, but they've been updated for the book. For retirees and the curious of all ages, the book will serve as a guide and case study of one couple's endeavor to live the dream (May 2011).
CRUISING WORLD:
In a nation of baby boomers, this volume targets an often ignored niche: senior sailors. The crux of the book is a primer based on the septuagenarian author's experiences gleaned when, after retirement, he and his wife bought a Mariner 31 ketch and went cruising. Djos advises on choosing and buying a pre-owned boat, refitting, selecting a marina, heavy weather tactics, and medical issues for older cruisers.
SOUNDINGS MAGAZINE:
Seasoned sailors with the wind still in their sails might consider "Sailing Out of Retirement: Living the Dream" by the veteran cruising couple, Matts and Jeanine Djos. The two have extensively sailed the West Coast from Canada to Mexico, and Matts has written extensively as a freelance writer for multiple nautical magazines. In their new book, the retired couple offers suggestions on how to find the right used boat--drawing from their own experience--from an extensive restoration to a shakedown cruise.
Also chronicled are the nuances of marinas and moorings; short and long term cruising, common sense seamanship, matters of personal health, safety and onboard ambiance and comfort--all geared toward retirees and seniors.
The Djoses currently sail a trailerable 26 foot Balboa and a Mariner 31, which is moored in San Pedro, Calif.

About the Author

About the Author:
Matts Djos was born in Seattle, Washington, the setting for much of his work. He married Jeanine Cooper in 1959 after a tumultuous courtship. Three years later, he graduated from the University of Washington with a secondary teaching certificate and a B.A. in English. He was awarded an M.A. in English from the University of Idaho in 1967 and a Ph.D. in English from Texas A&M University in 1975.
In the fall of 1975, after fourteen years as an English teacher in north Seattle, he accepted an invitation as an assistant professor of American Literature at what is now Colorado Mesa University in western Colorado. He was later promoted to a full professorship. In 2006, after forty-five years as a scholar, writer, and teacher, he retired with honors as a professor of English, emeritus. Later that year, he and Jeanine moved to an alpine paradise in the high country of western Colorado. They continue to ski, travel, and ski.
Jeanine and Matts have been blessed with three daughters and seven grandchildren.

Matts has published extensively, both as a scholar and as a freelance writer. He has written five books and more than fifty scholarly, contracted, and freelance articles during the past twenty years alone. His book, "Writing Under the Influence: Alcoholism and the Alcoholic Perception from Hemingway to Berryman" (Palgrave/MacMillan, 2010) is nationally regarded as something of a breakthrough in the study of the connection between creativity and addiction.
His nautical books, "Sailing Out of Retirement," "Fixing Positions," and "The Sacrament of Sail," have been singled out for special recognition and editorial praise among the major, international sailing magazines.
The alcoholic references in his most recent novel (to be released in late 2014 or early 2015) are based on Matts’ professional knowledge of addiction and his personal experience.
Matts continues to teach classes on writing from time to time and has been a presenter at numerous literary and writing forums and workshops.
