Overview

Based on a true story, Gloria Rand's children's picture book Salty Dog—featuring beautiful watercolor illustrations by her husband Ted Rand—follows the adventures of a puppy who grows up riding on ferries and sails around the world.

Boat builder Zack takes the ferry to work every day accompanied by his young pup Salty, until the dog gets too big to hang around the shop. But Salty enjoys the daily voyage too much to be left behind, taking the ferry by himself to join Zack.

Once his vessel is as sea worthy as his dog, Zack and Salty set sail on a wonderful and heroic journey across the oceans.

About the Author

Gloria and Ted Rand are a husband-and-wife team who have collaborated on a number of picture books, including Mary Was a Little Lamb and A Home for Spooky. The Rands live on Mercer Island in Washington State.

K-Gr 3-- Zack, a boatbuilder, acquires a puppy with the intention of making him a seagoing dog. The two ride the ferry between home and work, and tiny Salty wins the crew's affection. At Zack's boatyard, Salty is kept in a box to avoid danger. But as Salty grows too big for a box, he must be left home alone. Missing Zack, Salty digs out under the fence and hops aboard the ferry on his own. Soon he becomes a regular commuter. When Zack finishes his building, Salty is outfitted with a life vest and taken on his maiden voyage on the boat that now bears his name. (There's an inconsistency here: if the grownup Salty acts so responsibly at the boatyard, why does he commute alone and not just hang out with Zack?) This engaging and affectionate tale is illustrated in brilliant watercolor spreads that pay close attention to detail.
