Description: This drug handbook contains information about medications that nurses administer in hospitals, clinics, and homes. The accompanying website replicates what is in the book and adds a few pages on herbal supplements, medications that lengthen Q-T interval, and some updates. It is updated each year.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick reference that helps nurses and student nurses understand the medications that they administer to patients. The online format does not add that much to the book.
Audience: This handbook is intended for nurses and, therefore, nursing students as well. If a nurse is going to use a handbook, then it does meet the needs of the audience. However, most nurses today would use the smartphone app that can be purchased for the same price as the book. The authors are certainly credible.
Features: The handbook covers over 1,000 medications. Structurally, it is similar to other nursing drug handbooks. Each medication is listed in a specific drug class, along with adverse effects, usual dosages, precautions, what the drug is used for, how to give it, and the pharmacokinetics. The best parts of the handbook are the Black Box warnings, the nursing considerations, and, especially, the sound-alike drugs. A unique feature of this handbook compared to the others is a pull-out chart of IV compatibilities.
Assessment: The quality of the book is excellent, but the website probably will not be used. Both are very similar to other nursing drug handbooks by Elsevier and F.A. Davis. I teach pharmacology, and our students use the smartphone app and not the book. Instead of publishing a new version every year, it might be a good idea to just issue updates and then reprint every two years.
