Description: This is the 10th edition of the practical guide to help with the interpretation of liver biopsies. The previous edition was published in 2016. It is accompanied by an ebook.
Purpose: The intent is to provide a practical text to be used as a reference at the microscope, with tips, clues, and pearls on liver pathology diagnosis.
Audience: This is a reference primarily written for general and gastrointestinal pathologists. Pathology resident trainees will also find this text useful.
Features: This book offers a foundation to address specific diagnostic questions in liver biopsy pathology, with topics including biopsy assessment, laboratory techniques, normal liver histology, transplantation, acute and chronic hepatitis, biliary tract diseases, childhood disorders, and hepatic neoplasms. There are 17 chapters, each of which is followed by a list of references. These chapters are organized in an intuitive manner, with biopsy assessment, laboratory techniques, normal histology, initial assessments, patterns of injury, and differential diagnoses of pathological features all focused on in the early chapters. The middle chapters then cover diagnostic entities by general clinicopathologic category (i.e., chronic hepatitis, drugs and toxins, biliary disease, and neoplasms and nodules, for example). The final chapters address unique clinical scenarios such as childhood liver disease, systemic disease, and organ transplantation. The chapter format is fairly uniform with an introduction followed by descriptions of each diagnosis/diagnostic category, and the differential diagnosis. The text is greatly enhanced by superb illustrations including full-color and fully annotated photomicrographs, updated algorithms and tables, and occasional anatomic diagrams.
Assessment: This practical guide is an excellent resource to practicing pathologists who interpret liver biopsies. The outstanding book organization allows readers to reference a particular section of the book to supplement their biopsy interpretation in real-time. Chapters read easily and are supported by incredible images and tables that provide a quick supplement to the diagnostic process. The differential diagnosis section at the end of each diagnostic entity ensures readers understand the full differential for a particular histopathologic pattern of injury. Importantly, clinical-pathological correlations are emphasized, providing the readers with a useful clinical frame of reference. Additionally, the text includes up-to-date information on molecular genetics (including next-generation sequencing), immunohistochemistry, and drug-induced liver injury (including newer biologic agents). The format flows intuitively with easy-to-read text and superb images, allowing for an additional use to trainees who would like a formal overview of liver pathology. Overall, this book is a great addition to the personal libraries of pathologists who interpret liver biopsies.
