About the Author

Diane D. Knott was born and raised in south Louisiana. While growing up, Diane loved sleeping under beautiful hand-stitched quilts made by her great-grandmother. After graduating from High Point University in North Carolina, she spent almost a decade as a flight attendant for American Airlines. When Diane was expecting her first child, she enrolled in a quilting class to learn how to make a baby quilt. Almost 20 years, three children, and many, many quilts later, she loves quilting for family and friends. Quilts made from the scraps of those gifted quilts are her favorites because there are memories in every stitch!

Diane is a contributing writer to the craftsy.com website. Her designs are published in various quilt magazines and calendars on a regular basis. She enjoys sharing her quilts with guilds and groups through trunk shows and workshops. Her teaching and workshop schedule can be found on her website (butterflythreadsquilting.com). When she’s not quilting, she can be found cheering for her kids at their sporting events, tending her vegetable garden, reading historical fiction, or traveling with her family. The word 'scrap' can have the implication of fabric that is left over or unwanted, but when you see the stunning designs in this book, you'll realise just how fabulous working with scraps can be. In the first part of the book the author explains her secrets for using scraps. She provides guidance for selecting fabrics and making the most of every piece. Some of the quilts are simple, some more complex, some have a very restricted colour palette, others utilise a wider range of fabrics. There are many options to choose from, whether your preference is for a traditional or more modern look. As well as expert tips, there is plenty of reference information on quilt-making basics, as well as blanks for colouring so you can design your own unique block versions. This book is a great reference for when you are wanting to make room in your stash.

The six design techniques are based on the acronym SCRAPS. Style is a personal choice, traditional, geometric patterns, folky, etc. Contrast, more important than colour. Use a camera to check colour values. Repetition, use one colour or shape in every block. Accent, one fabric to unite blocks e.g. as in sashing. Palette, limit colours to two or three. Selvedges, perhaps the most surprising, cut selvedges together by overlaying them to make striped fabric. Every area has two or more quilts for each technique. There are clear directions for many methods of piecing. It is an interesting approach to scrap quilts. It is my Book of the Month.

Knott, published by C&T Publishing will be released in April, and in it, Diane explains how she moves from traditional quilts as inspiration to creating her own original designs. The main premise is that if you learn to pay close attention to what it is you like about one quilt, you will be able to create your own version of it that is successful rather than disappointing. Each chapter discusses a design element that you may find appealing as the central focus of your quilt: style, contrast, repetition, accent, palette, and selvages. Each chapter also has quilt designs and instructions, including an templates needed, which will help you explore these concepts. Throughout is Diane's advice and tips on how to customize the patterns and plans for yourself. The instructions are very clear and complete, and in the back are line drawings of each design for you to copy and color to make your own plans!
