CHAPTER 1
There was a glove by the side of the road. At once I knew its fate.
That was thirty-five years ago, when found objects first inspired my work in wire. I liked the linear quality of wire for drawing in space. It was pliable enough to wrap around objects and had the capacity to become a hinge or a lever on a sculpture.
As my technique developed, my fingers grew calloused using pliers to make each bend in the wire. Friends took on the role of muses to guide my hands, as I searched for meaning in my work. This life-long journey became an exploration of self-discovery, as much as an exercise in making art.
People came into my life with a beautiful energy that was meant to be captured. It was the spirit of the person I was striving to evoke, not merely a likeness.
I was drawn to the elusive yet eternal something that connects all things to each other.
The wire spoke through me, in sharp detail, which eventually became a distraction. I wondered, what hides behind the wrinkles on this face or fingernails on that hand?
