Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 5-8-A suspenseful novel about a young teen who, with the help of some observant and caring adults and peers in her new town, extricates herself from an abusive and exploitative relationship with her father. Carly has been deliberately incurious about the errands she runs for him, the true nature of his business, and the reasons for the family's frequent, sudden moves. She chafes under his rigid rules and scrutiny, and is frightened of his violent tendencies. As the strong arm of the law extends itself, and others, including a neighbor who is a former victim of abuse, press her for explanations, she puzzles out the truth: her father is a counterfeiter, and he'll do anything to protect himself. The characters are not especially complex, but their situation is quite involving; the atmosphere and a bit of a love story keep this solid, well-paced tale moving along.-Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Public Library, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
