Description: This is a highly specialized book written by primarily physicians covering all conceivable uses of sedation and analgesia. There are very few illustrations, all black-and-white line drawings.
Purpose: The purpose is "to review sedation and analgesia from a wide variety of perspectives starting with the basic neurobiology and physiology of the sedated state, proceeding through clinical guidelines and practices, and concluding with a section on quality-outcome measures and processes." These worthy objectives have been met.
Audience: The authors believe the readership includes "physicians and nurses, clinical investigators, and hospital administrators working in a clinical setting where sedation and analgesia are practiced." I agree with this with the possible exception of hospital administrators, who may not have the expertise to comprehend much of this medical text. This would be an excellent resource for clinical areas where sedation and analgesia are administered.
Features: The content is technical and comprehensive. To do it justice I will quote the authors, "Starting with an integrated review of the basic physiology and neurobiology of the sedated state, the authors proceed through clinical guidelines and practices, and conclude with an examination of quality-outcome measures and processes. To enable clinicians to develop institutional guidelines for their own practice settings, they also review current mandates for safe sedation practices established by such regulatory agencies as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Additional chapters address the key clinical issues of pharmacology, monitoring, and recovery." There are tables and figures throughout the book summarizing protocols, regulatory requirements, dosages, monitoring requirements, and quality assurance tools.
Assessment: The book is technical and comprehensive. Many research studies are cited. Multiple drugs and procedures are included. It is an excellent reference for professionals providing sedation and analgesia in various settings. Nurses would have to be specialists in these settings to understand or have a need for this book.
