About the Author

Before I became an author, I taught elementary school for 25 years. 7 of those years were spent in northwestern South Dakota. Our first child was born while we lived there, and our experiences with him resulted in 6 books for the special needs community. My fiction series, West River Mysteries, draws heavily on my years as an Iowan who landed in cowboy country, who taught country school, and who was adopted and cared for by the locals in the tiny town where we lived.

Author Jolene Philo has written another fun tale, the sequel to her first Jane Newell, amateur/sleuth mystery. You'll find another murder, new characters, and more humor in this rural town of South Dakota filled with nosy, quirky townspeople. The author does a good job of developing her colorful characters, and she creates a suspenseful story, along with a little romance and an unexpected ending. She captures well the flavor of this small, rural town of 92 people and pulls the reader in to follow them in this second book. Christmas adds a sweet ingredient to the growing love between the school kids and their young, determined teacher. And Jane Newell is developing a reputation for more than school teaching, especially as her amateur sleuthing keeps her in the middle of danger repeatedly. Rebecca B. Jordan

I loved this book. As a transplanted New Yorker, now living in Florida, I must say that throughout the book I continually was asking -what kind of lunatic would choose to live in this climate?- I just could not comprehend it! Having said that, I so totally enjoyed reading this mystery with twists, turns, warmth and laughter. I highly recommended it! Jamie Yelton

I am still really, really liking this series. It reminds me so much of the Jan Karon or D. E. Stevenson books--regular people, regular town, some quirky characters. Took me back to the days of Christmas programs in school. And her interaction with the kids is so fun. I did struggle just a little with Jane's quick-to-get irritated mode with people who were trying to protect her, but she is trying to be independent and take care of herself. Holding back evidence without following up with the sheriff when he didn't call? Very stubborn! But I look forward to the final book and getting to know the people of Little Missouri, South Dakota even better. Will spring fever strike? Is Jane going to get to like and trust Dick Phillips? See Jane Sing is a delightful story that pulls the reader back into small town living where traditions date back to the frontier days, everyone knows what you are doing before you do it and gossip runs wild, but it is done with the utmost care and concern for your fellow community members - especially when they are a young single teacher who might need a little extra taking care of. Having grown up in the community where this story was set and having attended this small school, the story brought back many fond memories. Even so, a fresh twist of mystery made the story feel new and exciting. Highly recommend! Karen Wagner
